Author's photo album of "Humming" locations

This page shows photographs of places that inspired the novel "Humming". These are amateur photos taken by the author, Rachel McAlpine. I wonder if they are similar to the mental pictures created by you as you read the book? Either way, it doesn't matter - these are for your interest only.

Below: You might imagine Jane's cafe looking something like this beautiful old pink villa. In real life the villa is not tilting at an angle... but then again, sometimes in magical Golden Bay, you feel as if the world is sliding away.

Below: Golden Bay has many fantastic cafes, many familiar to the author. The Courthouse Cafe and Gallery in Collingwood doesn't have its own web site, so a couple of photos are included here. (Photo taken a while ago when it was in need of paint.)

Below: In "Humming", Eleanor is vicar of tiny St Cuthberts Church in Collingwood, one of the secret treasures of Golden Bay.

Below: St Cuthberts, Collingwood is a jewel of a church in miniature, with a traditional interior including rich wooden pews and windows with glimpses of estuary and mountains. Here Jane contemplates her relationship with the mysterious Hum in theological terms. Could it be the voice of God speaking very, very slowly, she wonders?
