Gaylene Preston launched the novel "Humming" in Wellington on Wednesday 6 July, 2005. Seventy people attended, and started proceedings with an impressive combined hum. Bruce and Janice Caddy of Dymocks, Lambton Quay, Wellington hosted the launch.
Gaylene sees Rachel's novel as the flip side of the rural-Gothic story of city folk stranded among the bogans. "Rachel actually presents a story of country folk tolerating the extreme art of invaders from the city," said Gaylene. "It is not the kind of rural story we are used to."
Rachel then read a short, frivolous excerpt from the book.
